Thomas Clay has been a “healthy home” pioneer since 1999 and has dedicated the past 12 years to the creation of the Healthy Green Lifestyle Center. He is very passionate about helping those suffering from environmental related illnesses and working with entrepreneurs that Give Back to their communities.
This passion became the foundation for him creating the National Indoor Air Quality Institute (NIAQI) in 2001 and the merging of NIAQI with the Environmental Education Foundation in 2004. Thomas then launched the Healthy Building Institute of America in 2005 (renamed the Healthy Green Institute of America in 2008). In 2004 and 2005, Thomas was named a member of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Advisory Board for the establishment of new national commercial indoor air quality standards, still in effect today.
Having earned a degree in finance from La, Tech University in 1984 Thomas moved to the Dallas/Ft. Worth area to work in the residential real estate industry. In the latter half of the 1980’s the Texas real estate market experienced a dramatic downturn and he move to Ohio to work at Clay’s Park Resort, his family’s 500 acre entertainment and recreational facility. In the mid 90’s he used his entrepreneurial passion and started a business coaching practice designed to help other family owned businesses.
While working as a business coach and living in an old farm house at the family Resort he became personally involved with environmental illness issues and indoor air quality problems when the health of his family suddenly deteriorated. Despite the suffering of respiratory issues, liver problems, fatigue, and flu-like symptoms, his family’s medical diagnoses kept changing and doctors seemed unable to offer effective treatment options.
In 1998, through one of Thomas’s coaching clients he became aware of indoor contaminants, such as molds, bacteria, and viruses and their potential impact on his family’s health problems. After he discovered that his home was contaminated with both visible and hidden mold and lacking any viable professional help in this area, Thomas took it upon himself to research what was possibly causing these molds to now grow so aggressively in his home. Once he “connected the dots” so to speak he began mitigating the moisture sources and removed the mold from his home without using toxic or harsh chemicals.
In 2001 Thomas used his research, new contacts and own personal health experiences to launch the National Indoor Air Quality Institute. Through the Institute Thomas continued his research and was the first on the Internet educating the public about the NEW generation of harmful molds and how they were now aggressively mutating and growing in our homes and making us sick.
Since this was a new and fast moving problem for hundreds of thousands of families across the country, Thomas began developing and implementing his own non chemical or “environmentally responsible” protocols and procedures for moisture mitigation and mold remediation. He did this by identifying health care practitioners that could help, incorporating healthy green technologies, medical-based solutions, and a common sense approach. An added bonus for his new protocols and procedures was the fact they took only a fraction of the time to work and at a fraction of the cost compared to those mold remediation methods being used at the time.
One very important discovery in his research was the idea that this new generation of molds appeared to be mutating after decades of exposure to toxic chemicals in our environment. This new generation of mold is more TOXIC and ALLERGENIC in nature and making people sick, especially kids, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems.
In other words, over exposure to these molds are having a TOXIC effect and traditional doctors are not always in the best position to help with the detoxification process. Many doctors’ practices are not set up to gather the necessary information for proper diagnosis and prescription medicines can add to the problem. Furthermore, if you’re suffering from overexposure to mold in your home or office, your body is suffering from Toxic Overload! The sooner you can flush out the toxins and reduce the use of chemicals in your home, water, food and air the better you will feel. This is what we refer to as Healthy Green!
Since the initial mold project in his home 12 years ago, Thomas has trained a network of over 200 contractors, consulted on hundreds of healthy home-related projects and coached hundreds of families suffering from environmentally-related illnesses.
